How Carbon Hybrid Wheel Technology can Transform your Driving Experience

What are Dymag BX-F™ Carbon Hybrid wheels?

A Carbon Hybrid performance car wheel combines carbon fibre with other materials like aluminium or magnesium. To achieve this, the wheel is assembled from 2 pieces – the Rim (or ‘barrel’) is the large outer part which holds the tyre, and the centre (or ‘face’), which is the central part of the wheel (usually featuring spokes) which attaches to the hub. These two pieces are most commonly joined together using lightweight titanium fasteners.

What are the benefits of fitting Carbon Hybrid wheels?

Handling & Acceleration

Most of us know that light-weighting is nearly always the quickest and easiest way to improve performance. Still, you may not know that a reduction in unsprung weight makes a much bigger impact on performance than the same weight saving anywhere else on your vehicle.

Unsprung components are those which are not supported by the suspension system – including wheels, tyres, brake assemblies, and certain parts of the suspension itself such as control arms and axles.

Weight reductions here directly affect your vehicle’s handling by optimising suspension response and control. This improvement ensures superior tyre contact with the road, enhancing grip, acceleration, braking performance, and overall driving dynamics.

Choosing Carbon Hybrid wheels will give you an instant and significant reduction in unsprung weight – with Dymag Carbon BOXSTROM™ BX-F™ barrels with forged aluminium centres being up to 40% lighter than cast aluminium and 20% lighter than forged aluminium.

In addition to reducing unsprung weight, lightweight BX-F™ Carbon Hybrid wheels also greatly reduce rotational mass. This reduction in the gyroscopic effect of rapidly rotating wheels boosts both acceleration and braking performance, whilst making your car feel more agile during cornering and rapid direction changes.

Heat Management

While Monobloc Carbon wheels have good thermal properties, the aluminium in a Carbon Hybrid wheel acts as a heat sink, absorbing and dissipating much more of the heat generated from braking and friction between the tire and the driving surface.

Repairability

Because Carbon Hybrid wheels are a 2-piece design, if one part of the wheel gets damaged, it can often be replaced without needing to replace the entire wheel. For example, if the rim gets cracked, it can be unbolted and replaced while retaining the original centre (and vice versa). With single piece wheels this is not an option and you would have to replace the whole wheel.

Customisation

Again, unlike Monobloc, 2-piece Carbon Hybrid wheels offer a high degree of customisation as the centre and rim can be mixed and matched in various designs, finishes and colours to achieve a specific look and feel.

Why the Automotive Elite choose to partner with Dymag

Both premium wheel companies and automotive manufacturers understand that advanced composite wheel technology is a highly specialised area of automotive engineering. Widely recognised as pioneers in carbon hybrid wheels, many elite automotive brands and race teams choose to partner with Dymag due to the company’s long-standing reputation in high-performance and elite motorsports sectors.

50 Years of Performance Excellence has seen Dymag wheels driven in multiple elite racing series such as F1, IndyCar, Le Mans and Paris Dakar. Dymag have also been brought in on countless special projects, like Jenson Button’s Radford Lotus Type 62-2 Programme. Manufacturers including Aston Martin, Lotus, Koenisegg and Honda have all specified Dymag wheels as OEM, with the likes of BMW, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Porsche owners using Dymag wheels as aftermarket solutions.

Leading premium wheel companies such as Forgeline, Vorsteiner, Brixton and Anrky also specify Dymag Carbon BX-F™ Barrels in their top-end Carbon Hybrid wheels. Such is the reputation and cachet of Dymag that their wheels are co-branded, retaining the Dymag logo on the finished rim.

Dymag BOXSTROM™ Carbon Barrel Technology

Named after the founder of Dymag, Max Boxstrom, the Dymag BOXSTROM™ barrel leads the way when it comes to Carbon Hybrid wheels.

With a growing list of international patents, BOXSTROM™ rims feature a revolutionary design which makes them not only technically superior, but also safer than alternative hybrid and aluminium wheels. That’s thanks to both a super-strong and durable construction, but also due to built-in safe-failure features.

These centre around moving the main load bearing structure of the wheel away from areas that are most exposed to impact damage such as kerbs, potholes and road debris. Importantly the design also substantially improves overall wheel stiffness and fatigue resistance.

With BOXSTROM™, Dymag has created a carbon barrel that, when paired with a bespoke high-specification forged aluminium or magnesium centrepiece, combines the cutting-edge performance of carbon composites with the styling flexibility and stiffness of forged centerpieces.

Dymag’s Role in Creating a Game-Changing Supercar – The BAC Mono

What is the BAC Mono?

Brainchild of British lightweight sports car firm Briggs Automotive Company, the BAC Mono was created to realise the founding brothers’ vision of producing a road-going vehicle which would deliver a pure and authentic driving experience, made possible by using cutting-edge racing technology.

Whilst other track focussed cars were built around a two-seat design, BAC determined that any car carrying a passenger has compromised performance. As the ‘Mono’ name suggests, their car is a single seater. A Road-legal, track-capable supercar to be more precise.

The Best of British Automotive Engineering

To achieve their revolutionary concept, BAC recognised early on the need for a supply chain and partnership strategy that would unite the finest engineering firms in the automotive sector. As a British manufacturer, BAC was committed to leveraging home-grown talent.

Of the 100 suppliers responsible for around 1,250 bespoke components in every vehicle, 95% were UK-based. Among these, Dymag was a key partner selected by BAC to realise their ambitions for superlight, high-performance wheels.

Weight Loss – Where it counts most

BAC design engineers knew that super lightweight wheels would play a crucial role in the Mono’s overall performance.

This is because reducing unsprung mass and rotational inertia delivers greater outright performance benefits than weight savings anywhere else on a vehicle. A lighter rotating mass requires less energy to accelerate and brake, while the lower gyroscopic effect allows ultra-rapid changes of direction, improving handling and responsiveness.

Using Dymag’s patented Carbon Fibre BOXSTROM™ barrels as part of a hybrid wheel solution achieved a weight saving of around 40% compared to forged aluminium. Additionally, the BX-E barrels also delivered class-leading strength and safety, thanks to a unique and innovative design that increases stiffness while safeguarding the wheel’s primary load-carrying path from impact damage.

Out-Performing the Rest

Launched in the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Dymag equipped BAC Mono supercar smashed the hill climb record by over a second faster than anyone else.

The Mono (and the higher-performance limited-edition ‘R’ version) continued to break numerous performance records, achieving production car lap records at multiple race circuits, setting rear-wheel-drive acceleration records, and winning multiple CotY accolades.

A Significant Milestone for Dymag BOXSTROM™

Dymag’s collaboration with BAC marked a significant milestone in the story of Dymag’s patented BOXSTROM™ Carbon Hybrid Composite wheels, with BAC being the first OEM partner to offer this groundbreaking technology on their cars. Since the initial BAC collaboration, BOXSTROM™ wheels have been specified for special projects by some of the world’s leading sports and supercar manufacturers.

In addition to the BX-E (Elite) version, Dymag have also launched the BX-F. Retaining all the performance and safety features of the original, the BX-F features a new and unique flange technology, allowing for a far greater range of centrepiece integrations. This opens up BOXSTROM™ technology to tuners and aftermarket performance wheel brands, enabling them to incorporate Dymag carbon rims into their designs and offer their own carbon hybrid ranges.

Why Road Racing?

Although prototype and track racing serve as excellent showcases for motorcycle brands, nothing compares to road racing for developing real-world technologies that are most relevant for our road-going customers. The bikes used in road racing closely resemble production motorcycles, with ‘stock’ classes often being nearly identical except for permitted suspension modifications. Moreover, the race surface quality and exposed conditions mirror those that road riders encounter in their everyday riding.

Road race bikes often have to turn harder through tighter bends, deal with dips and elevation changes and remain settled over poor and uneven surfaces including potholes, drains and manhole covers. Not only that, the distances are considerably longer. For instance, just one lap of the Isle of Man TT is nearly 38 miles, and the Superbikes cover six laps, amounting to nearly 230 miles in total – approximately three times the distance of your average MotoGP race!

Dymag wheels excel in these conditions due to their unique structural design, premium-grade material selection, world-class manufacturing, and a cross-functional team of engineers and quality experts who ensure that every wheelset undergoes meticulous testing and meets strict approval criteria before they are released. A key factor in Dymag’s winning record and popularity in the road race paddock is our ability to develop wheels that are both lightweight and strong – two attributes that are often considered mutually exclusive.

Lighter is Faster

Lotus’ Colin Chapman famously taught us that the most effective way to enhance any vehicle’s handling dynamics is to reduce its weight. And at the top of any racer’s list is reducing ‘unsprung weight’ – those parts of the bike not supported by the suspension.

This is because lowering unsprung weight has the most direct influence on riding dynamics – improving handling and stability, enhancing suspension performance, and optimising both acceleration and braking.

Wheels and tyres are almost always the heaviest components contributing to unsprung mass, which is why racers prioritise upgrading them.

The performance benefits are so pronounced that it’s widely accepted that no other upgrade gives such an instant boost in handling and performance as lightweight wheels.

Stronger by Design

Dymag forged aluminium wheels are stronger than stock wheels primarily due to the forging process, which results in a denser, more uniform material with far fewer imperfections.

The use of higher-grade aluminium alloys, precision engineering, and advanced design techniques further contribute to their superior strength, performance, and durability. These factors collectively allow Dymag to perfectly balance and optimise strength-to-weight ratio resulting in wheels that are typically both lighter and stronger than stock wheels.
